Introduction for New Local IT Support Staff

What is a LITSS?

IT support for staff at ANU is provided by each budget area. Local IT Support Staff (LITSS) are defined as those staff who are employed to provide IT support to their local community. IT staff who support research projects and do not provide general user support are not classified as LITSS.

The IT Support Model outlines the principal roles of LITSS. Individual LITSS's roles and responsibilities may vary depending on whether they will be working in a LITSS group supervised by an IT manager or on their own, and according to local needs.

LITSS working on their own are strongly encouraged to contact the LITSS Coordinator who will introduce them to Division of Information staff and familiarise them with centrally provided IT services
. LITSS who work in a team are also encouraged to come over and find out where the Division of Information staff are, what they do and how they can help.

LITSS Registration

LITSS have to be registered (with the Division of Information) by the employing area, before they are able to set up access to networked services for users. LITSS have privileged access to some centrally provided IT services through the Online Account Management System (OLAMS). The Division of Information will enable this access on receipt of a registration form, signed by the IT Sponsor, IT Manager or Business Manager of the area in which they are employed.

The range of services each LITSS can access depends on what their local area requires. The authorised functions are listed on the registration form. After it has been signed by the appropriate University officer, this form is then faxed to 6125 7699.

Note: before new LITSS can be registered by DOI, they must have an employee number.

Authenticated Access to Central IT Services

Individual users have access to their own account information through the web-based interface, OLAMS. LITSS are able to access and modify the accounts of all users within their designated area of responsibility. LITSS can also reset the passwords of their users.

Access to user accounts is through an authentication process requiring the LITSS to enter their University Identifier (UniID) and associated password.

Access to own account: http://olams.anu.edu.au/user
Access to users accounts: http://olams.anu.edu.au/litss/

The UniID is a unique number based on the first seven digits of the employee number preceded by a lower case 'u'. This number is allocated to new employees when they commence work at the University. The process is managed by the Human Resources Division and local Business Office. It is able to be used as soon as the employee appears in the download from the HR Management System, ESP HR. That is should generally be available within a day or two of the person commencing at the ANU.

Until new LITSS are given a UniID they cannot:

  1. access their own email account,
  2. access the Online Account Management System (OLAMS); or
  3. access the Software Archive

Email Address

When you acquire an employee number an email account is automatically generated. A Personal Email Address is also created using your firstname.lastname@anu.edu.au. To access your email you will need to know your UniID and password and have your account activated by a current LITSS.

There is a web document 'ANU Electronic Mail' which outlines exceptions to the ANU's approved convention for Personal Email Addresses. Personal Email address are issued on a first come first served basis. If a name is in use the next person with the same or similar name must accept a variation that does not clash with the existing address.

What are the LITSS and COMMINFO Mailing Lists?

The mailing list, litss@anu.edu.au, provides a forum for LITSS to discuss issues with and to seek help from other ANU campus local IT support staff.

The LITSS mailing list is a closed list and ANU LITSS are subscribed to the mailing list when they are registered. You are subscribed using your firstname.lastname@anu.edu.au email address and you must use this email address to send messages to the list.

litss@anu.edu.au is archived on the Web.

The COMMINFO mailing list, comminfo@anu.edu.au, is a closed list used for sending commercial information, advertising etc. about computer products or training opportunities. Unlike the LITSS mailing list, litss are unable to post to COMMINFO but can unsubscribe themselves. The comminfo mail is not archived. Should you unsubscribe yourself and then wish to be reinstated email litss.coord@anu.edu.au.

The signature of LITSS Coordinator's mail has some useful ITS contact information.

There is a LITSS web site with links to relevant information and services you will need. There is a Suggestions box on the LITSS home page so you can let us know if there is something you would like added to our web site.
