TIPS ON BROWSER SETTINGS - INTERNAL HOME SITE

The internal home page has been designed to fit onto a VGA (640x480 pixel) screen. However, there are many components within the browser which affect the way web pages appear. The following tips are included, primarily for users of Netscape or Internet Explorer, to indicate options for the way home site, and other, pages appear on their computer screen. These tips are provided as an indication of what can be done. There are many different browsers, and versions of browsers, in use at the University and it is not possible to cover them all in detail.

  • The Internal Home Page appears to best advantage when the "underlining of links" option is turned off. Most browsers have the facility to turn off underlining. This is usually found under "Preferences" or "Options". In Netscape Communicator 4, for instance, it is found under "Edit/Preferences/Appearance/Colours...".
In Internet Explorer (IE) it is found under "View/Options..Links".

  • Most browsers allow the user to set the font size to a comfortable reading level. This facility is available under "Edit/Preferences/Appearance/Fonts" (Netscape) or "View" (IE). Some users will prefer to use a smaller font and see the whole page on the screen. Others may prefer a large font which is easier to read. If using a larger font the 'page up' and 'page down' buttons on your keyboard allow faster scrolling than using the mouse (but wait until the page fully loads).

  • In most browsers it is possible to increase the size of the usable screen by using "text" in the toolbar/s rather than "icons". It is also possible to minimise the toolbars when you are not using them.

  • If you want the cursor to automatically appear in the "Search box" at the top of the page, enable Java and Java script in your preferences. For Netscape 4 this is found under: "Edit/Preferences/Advanced". In IE it is found under "View/Options/Advanced".

Your Local IT Support Staff (LITSS) or Student Consultants at InfoPlace can advise staff and students respectively on how to take advantage of the features of your web browser.
